Jessel Gallery — Welcome to Summer!

Backstreet Gallery & Studios — May & June 2022

& Studios on Art Alley, off of S. A St. Between 312 & 318 S. A St. Santa Rosa, California |
May was the month for my show at Backstreet Gallery and Studios, where I now have my new studio.
I loved being able to show my work there, in Santa Rosa's Arts District! |
And then I unexpectedly got a second show in June, when many of my studio colleagues we're on vacation, and gave me the walls they were going to use for our group show! I changed things a bit for the new show, taking some paintings down and putting others up. The photo above shows you most of my June show. (It's a nice big space!)
My thanks to everyone who came to see the show, and to those who fell in love with my paintings, and to those to whose homes some of them are now going! It was a joy.

Yosemite Sierra Artists masterclass
2020
Gallery 1551 Presents... Karen Lynn Ingalls
Originally scheduled to be up through April 12th, it included both landscape paintings and paintings from the Beauty from Ashes series there. I have fond connections both with friends there and with the church itself, from way back.
Of course, everything changed when everything shut down in March of 2020, because of the pandemic. But there were still some folks working at the church, and my paintings wound up being there through mid-January of 2022! My thanks to all the folks at the church — it was a pleasure to know that someone was enjoying them during that time, and I hope the paintings helped brighten up a challenging time.

So Far
at Sofie Contemporary Arts 1407 Lincoln Avenue Calistoga, California August-October 20, 2019 Noon to 6 PM Wednesday through Sunday Jan and Scott Sofie opened their Calistoga gallery two years ago, celebrated in this anniversary group show with artwork by most of the artists they've shown in that time. I'm very pleased to be one of them! |
The work you can see of mine there includes one of my 16"x 20" Beauty from Ashes paintings, that incorporate the ashes of my paintings lost in the Tubbs wildfire; seven of my smaller (6"x 8") Beauty from Ashes paintings; and one of my hillside landscape paintings.
Landscape Painting Art Workshop
Landscape Painting Art Workshop
at Calistoga Art Center 1435 North Oak Street Calistoga, California August 17-18, 2019 I'm looking forward to giving my Landscape Painting Art Workshop this August, after a post-fire hiatus. |
We'll look specifically at the process of painting from a photograph, using acrylic paints. We'll begin with choosing your palette and creating beautiful color harmonies. From there it's how to begin, how to create your composition, how to approach composition and design, how to create the illusion of distance, and more.... You can find out more about it at: http://www.napavalleyartworkshops.com/landscape-painting.html.
Open Studios Napa Valley Cover Art!
I'm honored to announce that my painting, Vineyard by the Pond, has been chosen as the cover art for the 2019 Open Studios Napa Valley catalog.
And you can see it through June 30th, in my show at Cuvaison Winery, 1221 Duhig Road, west of Napa in the Carneros District. If you scroll down a little, you can see a little more about Cuvaison and the work that you'll see there. |
And please note: Although you can drop in to see the paintings, please call them at 707-942-2455 if you'd like to make an appointment to taste their wonderful wines! You can learn more about the winery at: https://www.cuvaison.com/
Abstract Landscape Painting Art Workshop
Abstract Landscape Painting Art Workshop
at Calistoga Art Center 1435 North Oak Street Calistoga, California June 22-23, 2019 I'm so happy to be able to give my art workshops again! (2018 was a time of post-fire recovery, rather than teaching, for me.) This year's two-day workshops began with The Secrets of Color Harmony in May, and will continue with Landscape Painting in August. |
You can find out more about it here, at: http://www.napavalleyartworkshops.com/abstract-landscape-painting.html

Gallery Bergen — Lines of Fire / Lines of Ice
Gallery Bergen
Bergen Community College Paramus, New Jersey January 24 - March 30, 2019 Gallery Director Tim Blunk has brought together artists from across the country who are responding, with their art, to the threats of climate change. Several, like myself, are specifically responding to California wildfires and how we have been impacted by them, and others, from the east coast, are looking at storms, melting glaciers, and rising ocean levels.
|
I am honored to be a part of this — if you're in the area, I hope you'll take the opportunity to see it.

From the HeART: Wildfire Anniversary Show
Jessel Gallery
1019 Atlas Peak Road • Napa, California October 1 - October 30, 2018 Opening Reception Friday, October 12, 5-8 PM Last year, in the wake of the October wildfires, artist and gallery owner Jessel Miller immediately began putting together an art show to benefit local artists like myself who lost their studios and/or homes in the fires. That show, definitely put together from the heart, is called From The HeART: Wildfire Anniversary Show.
You can find my work in the company of artists Patrick O'Rourke, Andrea Lindstrom Anderson, Edmund Grant, Kristi Rene, Kathy Tranmer, and Anne Pentland, and sales will directly benefit each of the artists.
You can meet us at the opening reception, where some of the artists (probably including me) will speak informally, beginning at 6:00 PM. |

Three of my paintings, New Horizon I (the poster image), Beautiful Skies, and Green Horizon will be part of a show filled with artwork by artists from Sonoma and Napa Counties who were affected by last year's fires. New Horizon I was even, for two weeks, the image on a billboard announcing both the show and the ten-year anniversary of the Petaluma Arts Center.
I will also be part of a speaker's panel on October 12 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, dashing to it from our From the HeART reception at Jessel Gallery, to join other artists who will share their experiences of the fire and their own renewals through making art. It promises to be a heartfelt and moving evening.

Making more Beauty from Ashes...
I am honored to be a part of this article, written by Kevin Fagan at the San Francisco Chronicle, with photographs (and video online) by Lea Suzuki. And I was completely surprised, and honored, to have a detail of one of my Beauty from Ashes paintings chosen as this photograph to lead the article.
It's all about my artist buddies Helena Donzelli, Peter Alan, and I — all of whom lost our art studios in last October's wildfires — and how we are literally making art from the ashes, each in our own way. Helena and Peter lost their homes as well, so they have come a long way in their recovery. I feel blessed to be on this journey with them. |
My painting on a billboard for the Petaluma Arts Center!
I have so much to be thankful for — I am honored to have been chosen as the poster artist for the Petaluma Arts Center's upcoming show marking not only last year's wildfires, but also their tenth anniversary.
New Horizon I is the title of my painting, and not only will it be the show's poster image, it will also be featured on a billboard in Petaluma! This is the rough image I was sent of how it will look. WOW — what a wonderful surprise! You can see the show this fall, from September 29 through November 17, at the Petaluma Arts Center, 230 Lakeville Street, in Petaluma, California. |

|
The entire four days also mark Calistoga's celebration of the arts — it's Sarafornia!

It's all part of Napa Valley's Arts in April. And you can learn more about it at: www.celebratenapavalley.org/p/events/engage-overview/sarafornia |
Barn Raising — My Studio Recovery from the Tubbs Wildfire
January 2018
The barn studio that I'd been blessed to be able to use for nine and a half years was lost in the Tubbs wildfire this last October. In it were paintings and drawings going back to the 1970s, canvases, frames, easels, tables, shelving, a small press, grid walls and canopies for display, small sculptural pieces and armatures, art supplies and materials, mixed media paintings in progress, and much, much more. Although I cannot replace what the fire took, I need to build a new place where I can store my paintings and display materials — a new shed, next to my house, where I can keep my work nearby and safe. I'm putting together a barn-raising — an online fundraiser (perks will include cards, prints, and perhaps original paintings too). I'll be announcing it soon. If you're interested in finding out about it in the meantime, please let me know! |

Beauty from Ashes
Green Horizons • 16"x 20" • acrylics and ashes on canvas
|
December, 2017
The Calistoga Roastery 1426 Lincoln Avenue, Calistoga, California How do you make beauty from ashes? It's a metaphor for what many Californians are doing now, as they rebuild their homes, their work, and their lives. For me, this was also literal. While my home, thankfully, remained safe, my art studio in a barn on the ranch of friends outside Calistoga was completely burned.
The abstract landscape paintings in this series were created with acrylic paints, collaged photographs of the remnants of the studio, and the ashes of my burned paintings, to take the ashes of what had been, and, with them, create new beauty. |
My thanks to The Weekly Calistogan and editor Anne Ward Ernst, for her article, Calistoga artist creates 'Beauty from Ashes' using ash from her own burned art to create new art.
Jessel Gallery — Holiday Extravaganza

Opening Reception: Friday, Nov. 17 • 5 to 8 PM Open 10 AM to 5 PM daily through December Come join us at Jessel Gallery on Friday, November 17, for the opening reception of the Holiday Extravaganza! |
I'm pleased to be part of this fun, colorful show — and also to be there with some of my friends and colleagues from Open Studios Napa Valley. I've made collage panels for the occasion, with images of both my landscape and mixed media paintings, and I've also brought four smaller and mid-sized landscape paintings, too.
|
The Tubbs Fire and Fire Recovery
I and my home and home studio made it safely through this month's Wine Country firestorms (my barn studio was not so lucky) that ravaged Napa and Sonoma Counties — thanks to the hard work of many dedicated people. My thanks to all the firefighters, police, local officials, Red Cross, Salvation Army, and volunteers who took such good care of us!
|
While I was at the American Canyon evacuation center, I wound up being interviewed three times — for the PBS News Hour; for Fox; and for KRON4, the San Francisco Bay Area station that worked hard to bring news of the fire and keep locals up on what was happening. My favorite, though, was after I returned home, when KRON4's reporter Haaziq Madden drove all the way up to Calistoga to follow up and see how I was doing.
"IT FEELS WONDERFUL"
Some Calistoga residents are full of joy after learning they could return home. Newly returned home, I began working on many varieties of heart-shaped artistic post-fire signs to distribute to local businesses, if they wanted to put one in their window. I've been delivering them in recent days.

I was honored to be invited to show my landscape paintings at Santa Rosa City Hall Council Chambers this fall. I created a new series of paintings for the show.
My thanks to Jessica Rasmussen, the curator for the City of Santa Rosa, who does a marvelous job arranging art shows throughout the city for Sonoma County (and in my case, just over the hill in Napa County) artists. |
ENGAGE Art Fair – April 25-26, 2015
Saturday and Sunday, 10 AM to 4 PM In Calistoga, at the Napa County Fairgrounds 1358 North Oak Street, Calistoga, California ENGAGE Art Fair, the closing celebration of Arts Council Napa Valley's Arts in April, presented arts in action. Visitors saw Napa Valley artists at work, and were able to see and talk with them about their process and what's behind the work they do, and see their finished work.
Have you ever wondered how a painting is created? What happens to get from empty canvas to finished work of art? It doesn't happen automatically — and there are a lot of stages a painting goes through in the process.
It's true of all artwork.... Often, you would never guess from the beginning stages what the final result will be.
ENGAGE gave visitors a great opportunity to see many kinds of artists working in many and diverse media. |
Of course, since this is Napa Valley, visitors got some great food and wine tasting experiences, too. It's coming around next year, too, during Napa Valley Arts in April. Save the date for 2016!

ECHO Art Gallery
The Fine Art of Karen Lynn Ingalls, Janet Berrien, and Joe Kowalczyk February 7 through April 5, 2015 My thanks to everyone who came to see the show! And thank you for supporting contemporary Napa Valley artists like me.
These paintings are all of scenes near Calistoga, though my intentions are larger than simply recording what I see.
Here's a little excerpt from my statement about the work: "These paintings are as much about a state of mind and heart as a place and time. When you look at a beautiful scene, there is more than meets the eye. The world is alive. It breathes; it grows, in all seasons. Everywhere you turn, everything is alive. And in that life breathes joy. My mission as a painter is to see that life, that joy, and paint it. How do you paint joy? It is that simple, and that challenging." |

The Calistoga Art Market
Presented by the Calistoga Art Center at the Art Center, 1435 North Oak Street, Calistoga, CA Next Art Market to be announced 11 AM to 4 PM |
"What is an Art Market?", you might ask.
It's sort of the same concept as a farmer's market. But at the Art Market you have an opportunity to meet artists, see what they do, talk with them about their work, and buy their work directly from them. It's February, so of course we'll be indoors, at the Art Center. I bring special small paintings to this event — paintings small enough that I only show them at events such as this and open studios. (But I'm not doing Open Studios this year — so this is the place to find me and my small paintings.) In addition to paintings, I bring matted reproductions, greeting cards, and ceramic tiles (and more), with images of my artwork — with lots of choices of things that are small enough to tuck in a suitcase, if you're visiting from out of town. (My thanks to photographer Yvonne Henry for this photo from the August 2014 Art Market!)
