Would you like to simplify your landscape painting to get at essentials? Or use what you see in the landscape as a springboard to a new creation, instead of reproducing what you see more realistically?

In this workshop, you will learn eight different ways to create abstract landscape paintings, beginning with the one indispensable element of any landscape painting.

Each day, you will learn two different approaches to creating an abstract landscape painting, with:
  • Direct instruction on Zoom, so you can ask questions and share observations
  • Time-lapse video demonstrations by the teacher — so you can see each process in action, and learn applicable techniques
  • Looking at the work of historical and contemporary artists, to see the many different ways in which each approach can be taken

You’ll have time to put what you’ve learned into practice, then gather again to share what you’ve learned and ask questions.

Each workshop day will run from 10 AM to 4 PM, with a lunch break (when you can keep painting, too, if you like).

During the following week, you can take time to develop what you’ve learned, and, at the next meeting, follow up with any questions, share what you’ve been doing, and see the work of your fellow painters, before learning the next two approaches.

Three weeks after the workshop’s end, you’ll be able to meet for a bonus session, to share what you’ve been doing; see the creative directions all the other participants are taking; and ask any questions that have come up for you in the meantime.

Painting in this way strips the image down to its essence. If you usually paint more realistic-looking landscapes, it may change the way you see the world!

This class is designed for both beginners (who have at least a little bit of previous painting experience) and more experienced painters.

The teacher will be working in Acrylics, which does have particular advantages, but you are welcome to work in Oil Paints or Water-Mixable Oils, if you prefer those media.

NOTE: This workshop also helps support the Calistoga Art Center, currently closed to in-person classes, sustain itself until we can open our doors once more.

Would you like to simplify your landscape painting to get at essentials? Or would you like to what you see and using it as a springboard to a new creation, rather than painting more realistically?

In this workshop, we will focus on three different ways to simplify and play with images of the landscape, re-creating it in abstract form. You will create, depending on time, two or three new paintings.

Painting in this way strips the image down to its essentials. If you usually paint more realistic-looking landscapes, it may change the way you see the world....
