Would you love to learn to draw?

This 6-week evening drawing class at the Calistoga Art Center may be just what you're looking for....
Drawing may be something you learn to do with your hand, but it is ultimately all about learning to see.

You'll also look at the drawings of other artists and learn about drawing and sketching resources you can refer to later for information and inspiration.

Drawing and sketching will bring you a new appreciation of the world around you — you will find yourself seeing with new eyes. Come and join us!

(This class will also be followed by an Intermediate Drawing class, for those who would like to continue to develop their drawing skills.)

You'll begin with sketching basics, and learn about:
  • drawing tools
  • line drawing and the use of tone
  • light and shadow
  • positive and negative space
  • getting the proportions of things right
  • giving your drawings a sense of volume
  • 1-point and 2-point perspective
  • and how to put it all into practice in the creation of your own artwork.
Note: The pen, ink, and marker sketches seen here of scenes of Calistoga are part of Karen's sketchbook entitled Travel with me... to the Napa Valley. Previously  in the collection of The Sketchbook Project, at the Brooklyn Art Library, in Brooklyn, New York, the entire sketchbook was part of the Sketchbook Project's Mobile Art Library Tour of the United States in 2012.

About Karen Lynn Ingalls as a teacher: Karen is a working artist and California credentialed teacher (in Art and English) who lives in Calistoga, California, in the Napa Valley.

She has taught art classes, lessons, and art workshops in a variety of subjects to adults and children in Napa Valley, Sonoma County, and other parts of Northern California.

Although she is mostly known for her brilliantly colored landscape paintings of rural California, Karen's first medium was drawing. All her other artwork has depended on that.

Learn how to draw using one and two-point perspective. Whether you’re drawing buildings or interiors; cups and saucers or wine bottles; boxes or chairs or roads, knowing how to use perspective in your drawings and sketches will make an enormous difference!

A follow-up to Beginning Drawing, in this session, in addition to reviewing everything you've learned, you'll learn more about drawing all kinds of things in perspective and strengthen your skills in line drawing and tonal drawing. You'll also learn the basics of quick sketching and gesture drawing, so you can sketch anything quickly and easily, including people! If you want to sketch on location, whether around town or as you're traveling, this will give you the skills you need.

Beginning and intermediate level drawers welcome!
