Pear and pepper sketches for Napa Valley Open Studios

I'll be bringing sketches to Open Studios, too, including a series of sketches of pears and peppers I particularly like. I love the shapes of pears and peppers (and apples, too – you only have to ask any of my students who've seen me demonstrate still life painting). They have great character; they're very figurative.

These pears came from my friend Heidi. I just got some more from the trees of my friend Ellie – perhaps I'll have enough time to sketch a few of them, too – I hope! The peppers, however, came from Trader Joe's.

I know it’s a mistake to use words to describe the joy of enrichment gained witnessing beautiful drawing….
I must try harder to just absorb the artists intent.

Not a mistake at all! Especially for creative folks — some of us work visually, some with movement, some with music, some with words — and we process what we perceive in the ways that work for us.

Feeling the joy is a good thing, and if you use words to process and describe it, more power to you!

I'm glad you enjoyed the drawings — it's a beautiful, expressive medium foundational to pretty much every other visual art form. I'm so glad I got a strong grounding in it — it definitely influences all the art I make.
